When a person gets a life-saving transplant, it becomes a moment they’ll never forget. And in some cases, it creates a bond between patient and donor.

Kidneys from living donors tend to be healthier and last longer than kidneys from deceased donors. It also increases the number of kidneys available for people who need them.

When a friend announced he needed a kidney transplant, Amy Anderson, a Fairview pharmacist, didn’t hesitate. She registered to be a living donor and – soon after – discovered she was a match.

On a sunny Wisconsin morning, Shelley Hawbecker and Liz Schumacher exchanged tears, smiles and a pair of kidney-shaped slippers, a nod to the connection the two women share through living organ donation.

NewYork-Presbyterian, one of the largest, most experienced transplant hospitals in the nation, performed 953 transplant surgeries in 2023, more than any other hospital in the U.S., according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. 

Heavy rain and wind didn’t deter a group of Mayo Clinic Transplant Center staff on Monday, June 17 who joined a group of bicyclists raising awareness about the need for living organ donation.

When Vincent Scafuri needed a lifesaving kidney transplant due to advanced polycystic kidney disease (PKD), his wife, Griselda Espinosa, offered to be his kidney donor. 

Inspired by her work and her mother, Stephanie Donelan, a post-liver transplant coordinator at Mayo Clinic in Florida, gave her role as a transplant nurse new meaning by becoming an altruistic living kidney donor.
