Amy Infanger had a 1 in 3,000 chance of finding a kidney that her body would accept. Thanks to a living donor transplant chain that spanned across the country, she has a new kidney and a new lease on life.

On December 9, 2020, Gianna Graw saved four lives and became the first patient to make a “good samaritan” kidney donation through Hackensack University Medical Center’s partnership with National Kidney Registry (NKR), an organization that facilitates living donor kidney transplants.

Robert Montgomery, MD, DPhil, a pioneering surgeon and director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, has been appointed chair of the Department of Surgery. He will assume his new post on September 1, 2020.

Dr. Karamat Choudhry is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon who worked with Medical City Fort Worth since the day it first opened in 1976 and served as the second chief of staff at the hospital. When he needed a kidney transplant, he knew exactly where he wanted to go.

The Emory Transplant Center and patient Jamie McNeil have together created a safety net for McNeil’s two-year-old granddaughter, while also starting a chain of kidney transplants through the National Kidney Registry’s (NKR) Donor Voucher Program. Dr. George Lipkowitz was 33 when he arrived at Baystate Medical Center to oversee the hospital’s new transplant program. That was back in 1988, and now, 30 years later, he and his transplant team have completed their 1,000th transplant.
